Andale

Andale, Kansas relies on groundwater from the Equus Beds aquifer (part of the High Plains aquifer system) for its municipal water supply. However, the area faces supply and infrastructure challenges, notably the strain on local municipal well fields.

Water Supply and Quality Concerns

  • Aquifer Reliance: Like much of central and western Kansas, Andale depends on groundwater. Steady regional depletion of aquifers is a concern, and local drawdowns have required close monitoring.
  • Contaminants: Small water systems in the region frequently battle common groundwater pollutants, such as nitrates from agricultural runoff and naturally occurring or industrial radioactive contaminants.
  • Industrial Strain: The potential development of large-scale data centers in Sedgwick County threatens to drastically deplete shallow aquifers and burden municipal flushing systems, raising concerns for upstream municipal wells.
